FEBRUARY AT THE KAAITHEATER

Burning Ice #9 - Theatremaker Tiago Rodrigues - Choreographers Daniel Linehan and Noé Soulier - Philosophers Jean-Luc Nancy and Judith Wambacq - Musicians Liesa Van Der Aa and Ictus/Tom Pauwels

The 9th edition of our Burning Ice festival is taking over the Kaaitheater in February with a varied programme of performances, installation art and debate. But that's not all! The Portuguese theater maker Tiago Rodrigues is teaching us a poem. Choreographers Daniel Linehan and Noé Soulier play with the edges of dance. Philosophers Jean-Luc Nancy and Judith Wambacq give lectures as part of our RE:THINK programme. And we sail along the Mississippi with musicians Liesa Van Der Aa and Tom Pauwels (Ictus), looking for the fundamentals of the American roots music.

Tipping points

The 9th edition of Burning Ice, our festival on art and ecology, focusses on the impact of humans on the climate. Artists, scientists and theorists alike will search to answer the question why we seem to be unable to make a break with the actions that are taking us closer to dangerous climatological, biological and technological tipping points. In the programme several premières and international artists: Kris Verdonck/A Two Dogs Company with In Void (première) and Untitled, Sandy Williams creates Everything Happens So Much (première), Lieven de Cauter & Isabelle Stengers create Welcome to posthistory (première), Annie Dorson stages Hello Hi There,  Karl Van Welden stages Mars II, Maguy Marin with UmweltOrion Maxted stages The Machine and Lawrence Malstaff shows Tipping Point. And economists Paul De Grauwe en Federico Demaria discuss the book De-growth. A vocabulary for a new era.

Ever lasting poetry

In By Heart the Portuguese performer Tiago Rodrigues teaches ten people a poem. They have not seen the performance before and don't know which piece of poetry they will learn. Rodrigues shows how forbidden texts will nontheless last forever in our hearts and minds, even in the most barbarious times! After its tour through Portugal, the US, Canada, Spain and France the performance now comes to Belgium. > more info + tour dates

Move and Remove

Two ex-P.A.R.T.S. students went looking for the thin line between movement and choreography. Daniel Linehan flavours in dbddbb the tight structure of the march with a dadaistic sauce and in doing so dares to let the discipline be taken over by an absurd chaos. The performance had its première in Lille (FR) beginning of November and will end its tour through France and Belgium at the Kaaitheater. > more info + tour dates

In Removing Noé Soulier works the other way around: he starts from everyday movements to end up with a choreography. Removing premièred in Essen in October. First stop in Belgium is the Kaaitheater, afterwards it will be staged at STUK (Leuven). > more info + tour dates

Art and philosophy

In February, our RE:THINK programma is offering again some moments of reflection. The French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy dedicates his RE:THINK LECTURE Sur l'art de la pensée to the art of thinking and thinking about art, in relation to his newest publication. In On Philosophy and Dance Judith Wambacq explores the relation between dance and thinking.

Back to the Mississippi roots

Liesa Van Der Aa - composer, singer and leading lady of the experimental pop music in Belgium - and Ictus gitarist Tom Pauwels go down the Mississippi in American Lament (studio version), looking for the fundamentals of the American roots mucis. Enjoy the traditional bleus theme's clouded in the electronic sounds of the composers Christopher Trapani and Lary Polansky.  > tour dates

About Kaaitheater

Stage

Kaaitheater is a stage for dance, theatre, performance, music and debate in Brussels. Founded in 1977 as a pioneer of innovative performing arts, this house has grown into a platform for both work by artists of the Flemish Wave and new generations of performing artists. From Brussels to international, from small to large venues, and just as well in the squares and the streets, where urban and global themes are tangible.

Motto

Under the motto How to Be Many?, the Kaaitheater team makes room for a broad spectrum of stories, perspectives, artists and audiences, so we can learn to better reflect the city's many voices. That we do in cooperation with many partners.

Places

Currently, Kaaitheater’s building on the Sainctelettesquare will be under renovation. We will move into our new building in 2025 and that will give us an additional auditorium as well as a city balcony and spaces for artists and audiences, all of which will give the new urban arts centre on the canal its identity. In the meantime, we will continue to perform in Kaaistudio's, and we will be on the move through the city and briefly make use of at 14 many theatres and partners in and around Brussels, with whom we will present a multifaceted programme.

(In) practice

Looking towards the future, Kaaitheater will continue to develop new lines of participation and mediation so that we can introduce new generations of audiences to contemporary performing arts. We invite organisations and groups that still are underrepresented on the Brussels stages to create their own artistic programmes. This allows us to open the way for co-ownership of artists and audiences.

Kaaitheater moves with the times, stimulates social and artistic debates and embraces the pluriform performing arts of today and tomorrow.
